STA 25/09/2021: Nejc Znidarsic, a Slovenian kayaker, won Sunday’s sprint event at ICF’s wildwatercanoeing championships in Bratislava (Slovakia) to win his fifth title as world champion.
Znidarsic was 0.56 seconds faster than France’s Luca Barone. Maxence Barouh won bronze. Anze Urankar, from Slovenia, placed fourth.
His achievement of becoming the first whitewater champion in five different countries was a historic moment that he says he is proud to have made.
The 37-year old said that although world championships were held since 1952, no one has ever been the world champion five times.
His sport is not an Olympic one, but he doesn’t regret it. I want to have fun doing things. If you’re the best at something, I see no problem.”
The victory this year was even more convincing than the one he had two years earlier, which he lost by just 100th.
The run was described by him as exceptional, stating that it was “an optimal run at least on the course”, and partly due to his extensive experience.
